Our Special Human Body — Learning How Our Lungs and Heart Work

Teachers and children in a classroom science workshop on the human body, with poster, models, and thank-you text to Mr and Mrs Tan

We had a wonderful time exploring the human body with the children during this special science workshop.

Instead of simply memorizing facts, the children got to see, build and investigate how important parts of our body work.

How do our lungs help us breathe?

The children first explored how our lungs work when we breathe in and out.

Using simple everyday materials, they built a model of the lungs and observed how changes in air pressure can cause the “lungs” to inflate and deflate.

The activity helped them connect something they do every few seconds — breathing — with what is actually happening inside their body.

Where does blood travel through the heart?

We then moved on to the heart.

The children were introduced to the four chambers of the heart, but the focus was not on memorizing difficult names.

Instead, they followed the journey of the blood:

Body → Heart → Lungs → Heart → Body

Using plastic tubing, small containers and syringes, we created a simple working model to represent how blood moves through different parts of the heart.

By watching the liquid travel through the system, the children could begin to understand that the heart is not simply a “pump” — it is a carefully organised pathway that keeps blood moving in the correct direction.

Learning through experience

What we enjoy most about these workshops is seeing children move from:

“What is this?”

to

“Oh! So that is how it works!”

Science becomes much easier to understand when children are able to touch, observe, test and make discoveries for themselves.

Welcome to Primary 2!

In this year, your child will solidify the foundational skills from P1 and begin to explore more complex concepts across all subjects. It's about strengthening those academic muscles and boosting their confidence as they grow into more independent learners.

At STBB, we're here to ensure your child not only keeps up but continues to build a strong, positive relationship with learning.

What to Expect in Primary 2: Consolidating Skills

Primary 2 focuses on reinforcing core concepts and introducing new layers of complexity. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills begin to take a more prominent role, preparing them for the significant jump in Primary 3.

Key Subjects & Learning Focus:

  1. English Language:

    • Focus: Expanding vocabulary, improving reading comprehension, and developing more structured writing. Children begin to write short paragraphs, understand simple narratives, and engage in more detailed oral presentations. Basic grammar rules become slightly more complex.

    • How STBB Helps: Tutors delve deeper into phonics and sight words, introduce strategies for inferential comprehension, and guide children in crafting more coherent sentences and paragraphs. Personalized feedback on writing helps refine their expression and clarity.

  2. Mathematics:

    • Focus: Numbers up to 1,000, more complex addition and subtraction (including regrouping), and building a stronger foundation in multiplication and division. Introduction to fractions (unit fractions), mental calculation strategies, and word problems with multiple steps are key.

    • How STBB Helps: Tutors reinforce number bonds and operations, breaking down multi-step word problems into manageable parts. They introduce visual aids for fractions and use engaging mental math games to build both speed and accuracy.

  3. Mother Tongue Languages (Chinese, Malay, Tamil):

    • Focus: Increased vocabulary, more complex sentence structures, and deeper reading comprehension. Children develop confidence in basic conversations and begin to appreciate cultural nuances through stories, songs, and simple texts.

    • How STBB Helps: Tutors provide targeted practice for character/word recognition and stroke order (for Chinese). They engage in role-playing and storytelling to boost conversational fluency and deepen cultural understanding, truly bringing the language to life.

How STBB Supports Your Primary 2 Child

Primary 2 is a crucial year for solidifying early learning. Our STBB tutors help reinforce concepts, build confidence, and ensure your child is ready for the exciting challenges of the upper primary years. We focus on active engagement and personalized support to make learning enjoyable and effective, helping your child build a robust academic foundation.

Education in Singapore is changing—quietly but quickly. With the launch of the EdTech Masterplan 2030, the Ministry of Education has made its intentions clear: digital learning isn’t optional anymore.

While the Masterplan is aimed at schools, its implications extend to every tuition centre and freelance tutor who works with students exposed to AI, digital platforms, and blended learning environments in school.

Why It Matters (Even If You're Not a MOE Teacher)

Students today are being trained to:

  • Use digital platforms for homework, revision, and collaboration.

  • Navigate AI-based learning tools like adaptive quizzes or auto-marked assignments.

  • Think independently with self-directed learning tasks.

If tutors and centers don’t adapt, a growing gap will form—between how students are taught in school and how they’re supported in tuition.

What Tuition Centres and Tutors Should Rethink

Here are three signs a tutoring approach may be falling behind:

  1. Still relying only on physical worksheets or whiteboards.

  2. Avoiding digital collaboration tools like Google Docs or Slides.

  3. Unaware of how AI (e.g., ChatGPT, Quizizz) can enhance learning.

Actionable Ideas for Adapting (Without Breaking the Bank)

  • Use AI as a teaching assistant: Generate practice questions, rephrase answers for clarity, or build recap quizzes in seconds.

  • Digitize lesson tracking: Maintain a shared Google Doc or Notion page per student. Parents love it, and students stay more accountable.

  • Add simple tech touches: A 60-second video recap after class. A poll to revise the topic before next week. Small gestures, big engagement.

  • Get student feedback: Use Google Forms or a WhatsApp message to check how they feel about the lesson. Learning is two-way now.

Final Word

This isn’t about chasing the latest tech trend. It’s about staying aligned with how students are growing. The tuition scene in Singapore is competitive—and staying relevant means staying responsive.

The future of tutoring isn't just about subject mastery. It's about tech fluency, adaptability, and educator empathy.
