Our Special Human Body — Learning How Our Lungs and Heart Work

We had a wonderful time exploring the human body with the children during this special science workshop.

Instead of simply memorizing facts, the children got to see, build and investigate how important parts of our body work.

How do our lungs help us breathe?

The children first explored how our lungs work when we breathe in and out.

Using simple everyday materials, they built a model of the lungs and observed how changes in air pressure can cause the “lungs” to inflate and deflate.

The activity helped them connect something they do every few seconds — breathing — with what is actually happening inside their body.

Where does blood travel through the heart?

We then moved on to the heart.

The children were introduced to the four chambers of the heart, but the focus was not on memorizing difficult names.

Instead, they followed the journey of the blood:

Body → Heart → Lungs → Heart → Body

Using plastic tubing, small containers and syringes, we created a simple working model to represent how blood moves through different parts of the heart.

By watching the liquid travel through the system, the children could begin to understand that the heart is not simply a “pump” — it is a carefully organised pathway that keeps blood moving in the correct direction.

Learning through experience

What we enjoy most about these workshops is seeing children move from:

“What is this?”

to

“Oh! So that is how it works!”

Science becomes much easier to understand when children are able to touch, observe, test and make discoveries for themselves.
